When and How to Change Oil in Your Arctic Cat ATV or UTV
Why Regular Oil Changes Matter for Your Arctic Cat
Oil keeps your Arctic Cat engine running smoothly. It lubricates moving parts, helps cool the engine, and removes dirt and debris. Over time, oil breaks down and loses its ability to protect your machine. Changing your oil on schedule helps your engine last longer and perform better.
Standard Oil Change Intervals
Most Arctic Cat ATVs and UTVs need an oil change every 6 months or every 600 operating hours, whichever comes first. Some newer models may go longer between changes. Check your owner's manual for the specific recommendation for your machine.
If you use your Arctic Cat frequently or in harsh conditions—mud, dust, or cold weather—you may need to change the oil more often. Heavy use and dirty environments break down oil faster.
How to Tell If Your Oil Needs Changing
Check your oil level regularly by looking at the dipstick or sight glass. Dark, dirty oil is a sign it's time for a change. Fresh oil looks amber or light brown. If your oil looks black or feels gritty between your fingers, a change is overdue.
What You'll Need
- New oil (the correct grade for your model)
- New oil filter
- Oil drain pan
- Wrench or socket set
- Oil filter wrench
- Rags or paper towels
- Jack or lift (if needed)
Basic Steps for an Oil Change
Warm up your engine. Run your Arctic Cat for a few minutes so the oil flows easier. Let it cool slightly before draining.
Locate the drain plug. Consult your owner's manual to find where the drain plug is on your model.
Drain the old oil. Remove the drain plug and let the old oil flow into your drain pan. This may take several minutes.
Replace the drain plug. Once the oil stops dripping, wipe the plug clean and reinstall it. Don't over-tighten.
Change the oil filter. Use an oil filter wrench to remove the old filter. Install a new filter by hand—tighten it until snug, then turn it another three-quarters of a turn.
Add new oil. Pour in the correct amount of new oil through the filler cap. Check your manual for the exact amount.
Check the level. Use the dipstick or sight glass to confirm you have the right amount of oil.
Keeping Track of Your Oil Changes
Write down the date and operating hours when you change your oil. Keep this record with your machine's documents. This helps you remember when the next change is due and shows the maintenance history if you ever sell your Arctic Cat.
Disposing of Used Oil
Never dump used oil on the ground or down a drain. Take it to a local recycling center, auto parts store, or service shop that accepts used oil. Many accept it for free.
