How to Change the Oil on a CFMOTO ATV or UTV

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter for Your CFMOTO

Oil keeps your engine running smoothly by reducing friction between moving parts and carrying away dirt and heat. Over time, oil breaks down and loses its protective qualities. Changing your oil regularly helps your CFMOTO engine last longer and perform better.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather these items:

  • New oil (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount)
  • New oil filter
  • Oil drain pan
  • Wrench or socket set
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Jack and jack stands (or ramps)
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Safety glasses

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare Your Vehicle

Park your CFMOTO on level ground. Warm up the engine for a few minutes—warm oil drains better than cold oil. Then turn off the engine and let it cool slightly so you don't burn yourself. Raise the vehicle using a jack, and secure it with jack stands.

2. Locate the Drain Plug

Find the oil drain plug underneath your engine. It's usually a bolt at the lowest point of the engine. Place your drain pan underneath it.

3. Drain the Old Oil

Use your wrench to loosen the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise. Once it's loose enough, carefully unscrew it by hand. Let all the old oil drain into the pan. This may take several minutes. Wipe the drain plug clean with a rag.

4. Replace the Oil Filter

Locate the oil filter (your owner's manual shows where). Use an oil filter wrench to turn it counterclockwise until it's loose, then unscrew it by hand. Clean the rubber gasket area on the engine where the filter sits. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket of your new filter, then screw it on by hand until it's snug. Don't overtighten it.

5. Install a New Drain Plug Gasket

Some CFMOTO models use a crush washer on the drain plug. If yours does, replace it with a new one each time. Screw the drain plug back in and tighten it with your wrench—firm but not overly tight.

6. Add New Oil

Lower your vehicle back to the ground. Open the oil filler cap on top of the engine and pour in the correct amount of new oil. Refer to your owner's manual for the exact quantity. Replace the cap.

7. Check the Level

Start the engine and let it run for a minute, then turn it off. Wait a minute for the oil to settle, then check the oil level using the dipstick or sight glass. Add more oil if needed to reach the proper level.

8. Dispose of Old Oil

Never pour old oil down the drain or into the ground. Take it to a recycling center, auto parts store, or service station that accepts used oil.

How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

Check your CFMOTO owner's manual for the recommended oil change interval. Many models suggest changing oil every 100–200 hours of use or once per season, whichever comes first. If you use your vehicle in dusty conditions, you may need to change it more often.

Tips for Success

  • Always use the oil type and weight specified in your owner's manual.
  • Keep your owner's manual nearby while you work—it has model-specific details.
  • Work in a clean, well-lit area to avoid spills and mistakes.
  • Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from drips.
  • If you're unsure about any step, consult a CFMOTO dealer or may have access to mechanic.
