Changing the Lower Unit Gear Oil in Your Suzuki Outboard Motor
Why Lower Unit Gear Oil Matters
The lower unit of your Suzuki outboard motor contains gears that need proper lubrication to work correctly. Over time, gear oil breaks down and can collect water or debris. Changing the oil regularly helps keep your motor running smoothly and prevents damage to the gears inside.
What You'll Need
Before you start, gather these items:
- New gear oil (check your Suzuki manual for the correct type and amount)
- Drain pan or container to catch old oil
- Wrench or socket set that fits your drain and fill plugs
- Rags or paper towels
- Oil pump or squeeze bottle (optional, but helpful)
- Gasket scraper or plastic tool
Steps to Change Your Lower Unit Oil
Step 1: Prepare Your Motor
Place your outboard on a level surface or in a test tank. Let the motor cool for several minutes if you've been running it recently. Never work on a hot motor.
Step 2: Locate the Drain Plug
Look at the lower unit (the part underwater when your motor is mounted). You'll see two plugs—one near the bottom (drain plug) and one higher up (fill plug). Consult your Suzuki manual if you're unsure which is which.
Step 3: Drain the Old Oil
Position your drain pan under the lower drain plug. Slowly unscrew the drain plug with your wrench. Oil will flow out—let it drain completely. This may take a few minutes. Wipe the drain plug clean with a rag.
Step 4: Remove and Clean the Fill Plug
Unscrew the fill plug (the upper one) and set it aside. This allows air to enter as oil drains and helps the fresh oil flow in later.
Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug
Once the old oil has drained, wipe the drain plug threads clean. Screw it back in by hand first, then tighten it with your wrench. Don't over-tighten—snug is enough.
Step 6: Add New Gear Oil
Pour new gear oil slowly into the fill hole. You can use an oil pump or squeeze bottle to control the flow. Fill until oil just begins to come out of the fill hole. This means the lower unit is full.
Step 7: Reinstall the Fill Plug
Wipe the fill plug clean and screw it back in. Tighten it with your wrench, but again—don't over-tighten.
Step 8: Check Your Work
Run your motor for a few minutes in a test tank or at idle. Stop and let it cool, then check both plugs to make sure nothing is leaking.
How Often to Change Gear Oil
Most Suzuki outboard owners change gear oil every 100 hours of use or once a year, whichever comes first. If you use your motor in saltwater, you may want to change it more often. Check your owner's manual for Suzuki's specific recommendation for your model.
Common Tips
- Keep old oil in a container for proper disposal—don't pour it down the drain.
- Mark your calendar so you remember when you last changed the oil.
- If you see milky or cloudy oil during draining, water may be in the lower unit. Consider having a dealer inspect it.
- Always use the gear oil type listed in your Suzuki manual—different motors need different weights.
