How to Change Oil in Your Yamaha WaveRunner

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter for Your WaveRunner

Oil keeps your WaveRunner's engine running smoothly. Over time, oil breaks down from heat and use. Changing your oil regularly helps your engine last longer and perform better. Most WaveRunner owners change their oil every 50 to 100 hours of use, or at least once a year.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather these items:

  • New oil (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount)
  • An oil filter (if your model has one)
  • An oil drain pan
  • A wrench or socket set
  • An oil filter wrench (if applicable)
  • Clean rags or paper towels
  • A funnel
  • Jack stands or a lift (optional, for easier access)

Step 1: Warm Up Your Engine

Start your WaveRunner and let it run for a few minutes. Warm oil flows better than cold oil. After a few minutes, turn off the engine and wait about 5 minutes before draining.

Step 2: Locate the Drain Plug

Find the oil drain plug on the bottom or side of your engine. Check your owner's manual if you're unsure where it is. Place your drain pan underneath to catch the old oil.

Step 3: Drain the Old Oil

Use your wrench to loosen the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise. Once it's loose, carefully unscrew it by hand. Let all the old oil drain into the pan. This may take several minutes. Wipe the drain plug clean with a rag.

Step 4: Replace the Oil Filter (If Applicable)

If your WaveRunner has an oil filter, locate it on the engine. Use an oil filter wrench to turn it counterclockwise and remove it. Before installing the new filter, apply a thin layer of new oil around the rubber gasket on top. Screw the new filter on by hand until it's snug, then tighten it about three-quarters of a turn more.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

Screw the drain plug back in by hand first. Then use your wrench to tighten it firmly, but don't over-tighten it. A snug fit is all you need.

Step 6: Add New Oil

Place a funnel in the oil fill opening on top of your engine. Pour in the recommended amount of new oil from your owner's manual. Pour slowly and check the level as you go.

Step 7: Check the Oil Level

Most WaveRunners have a dipstick or sight glass to check oil level. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, then remove it again to read the level. Add a little more oil if needed. The level should reach the "full" mark.

Step 8: Run Your Engine

Start your WaveRunner and let it run for a minute or two. This circulates the new oil through the engine. Turn it off and wait a few minutes, then check the oil level again. Add more if needed.

Step 9: Dispose of Old Oil Properly

Never pour old oil down the drain or into the ground. Take it to a recycling center, auto parts store, or marina that accepts used oil. Many places take it for free.

Tips for Success

  • Keep your owner's manual nearby—it has specific details for your model
  • Work in a well-ventilated area
  • Let the engine cool slightly before handling hot parts
  • Don't spill oil on your WaveRunner or the water
  • Keep track of your oil changes so you know when the next one is due
