Step-by-Step Guide to Changing Oil in Your BMW X1
What You'll Need Before Starting
Changing your BMW X1's oil is a task many owners can do themselves. Before you begin, gather these items:
- New oil (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount)
- New oil filter
- Oil drain pan
- Wrench or socket set
- Oil filter wrench
- Jack and jack stands (if needed for undercarriage access)
- Ramps (alternative to jack stands)
- Funnel
- Clean rags or paper towels
- Safety glasses
Preparing Your Vehicle
Start by warming up your engine for a few minutes. Warm oil drains more easily than cold oil. Turn off the engine and let it sit for about five minutes so the oil cools slightly—this prevents burns.
Park on a level surface. If you need to raise the vehicle to reach the drain plug, use ramps or a jack with jack stands. Never rely on a jack alone.
Locating and Removing the Drain Plug
Look underneath your X1 toward the front of the engine. You'll see the oil drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan. Place your drain pan directly underneath it.
Using your wrench, loosen the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise. Once it's loose enough, carefully unscrew it by hand. Oil may still be warm, so be cautious. Let the old oil drain completely into the pan—this may take several minutes.
Replacing the Oil Filter
The oil filter is usually located on the side of the engine. Position your drain pan underneath it to catch any remaining oil.
Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter by turning it counterclockwise. Once loose, unscrew it by hand and set it aside. Wipe the filter mounting surface clean with a rag.
Apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter. Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface, then turn it an additional three-quarter turn.
Reinstalling the Drain Plug
Wipe the drain plug clean. Check the washer or gasket on the plug—if it's damaged, replace it. Screw the drain plug back in by hand, then tighten it with your wrench. Don't overtighten, as this can strip the threads.
Adding New Oil
Lower your vehicle if you raised it. Open the hood and locate the oil filler cap on top of the engine. Twist it counterclockwise to remove it.
Insert a funnel into the opening. Pour in the amount of new oil recommended in your owner's manual—typically between 4 and 6 quarts for an X1, depending on the model year.
Replace the oil filler cap and twist it clockwise until snug.
Checking Your Work
Start the engine and let it run for about 30 seconds. This circulates the new oil through the system. Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes.
Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, then pull it out again to check the oil level. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Add a small amount more if needed.
Check under the vehicle for leaks around the drain plug and filter. If everything looks dry, you're finished.
Disposing of Old Oil
Never pour old oil down the drain or into the ground. Take it to a recycling center, auto parts store, or service station that accepts used oil. Many locations take it for free.
