Lexus GX Oil Capacity and Type Guide
Understanding Your Lexus GX Oil Needs
Keeping your Lexus GX running smoothly starts with knowing the right oil for your vehicle. This guide explains oil capacity and type information for different GX model years.
Oil Capacity by Model Year
The amount of oil your GX holds depends on which year and generation your vehicle is:
First Generation GX 470 (2003-2009)
The GX 470 holds approximately 5.5 quarts of oil with a filter change. Without replacing the filter, the capacity is about 5.1 quarts.
Second Generation GX 460 (2010-2023)
The GX 460 requires about 5.5 quarts of oil when you change the filter. The capacity without a filter change is approximately 5.1 quarts.
Third Generation GX 550 (2024 and newer)
The newer GX 550 model holds approximately 5.9 quarts of oil with a filter change.
Oil Type and Specifications
Lexus recommends specific oil grades for your GX to maintain engine performance:
GX 470 (2003-2009)
Lexus recommends 5W-30 synthetic oil for this model. This oil grade works in both cold and warm weather conditions.
GX 460 (2010-2023)
The GX 460 also uses 5W-30 synthetic oil. Lexus specifies this grade for optimal engine protection and efficiency.
GX 550 (2024 and newer)
The GX 550 requires 0W-20 synthetic oil, which is a thinner grade designed for newer engine technology.
Why Oil Type Matters
Using the correct oil type helps your engine run efficiently and last longer. The numbers in oil grades (like 5W-30) describe how the oil flows at different temperatures. The "W" stands for winter. The first number shows how the oil flows when cold, and the second number shows how it flows when hot.
Synthetic oil offers better protection than conventional oil and lasts longer between changes. Lexus recommends synthetic oil for all GX models.
Checking Your Oil Level
You can check your GX's oil level using the dipstick or the digital display in your instrument cluster:
- Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes for the oil to settle
- Locate the dipstick under the hood (or use the digital gauge if your model has one)
- Wipe the dipstick clean with a cloth or paper towel
- Reinsert the dipstick fully, then remove it again to read the level
- The oil should be between the minimum and maximum marks
Oil Change Intervals
Lexus recommends oil changes based on your driving habits and conditions. Many newer GX models have maintenance reminders that tell you when an oil change is due. Check your owner's manual for the specific interval for your model year, as recommendations have changed over time.
Finding Your Owner's Manual
Your owner's manual contains detailed information about your specific GX model's oil requirements. You can find digital copies of Lexus owner's manuals through the Lexus website or by contacting your local Lexus dealer.
