How to Change the Oil Filter on Your Lexus RX

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather these items:

  • A new oil filter (the correct type for your RX model year)
  • An oil filter wrench or socket
  • A drain pan or container
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Jack and jack stands (if needed to access the filter)
  • Safety glasses

Locate Your Oil Filter

On most Lexus RX models, the oil filter is located on the side or bottom of the engine. Check your owner's manual to find the exact location for your year and model. The filter is typically a cylindrical canister about the size of a soda can.

Prepare Your Vehicle

Park on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Let the engine cool for a few minutes—warm oil drains faster, but hot oil can burn you. If you need to raise the vehicle to reach the filter, use a jack and secure jack stands under the frame.

Remove the Old Filter

Place your drain pan underneath the filter. Use your filter wrench to turn the filter counterclockwise. Once it's loose enough, unscrew it by hand. Be careful—there will be some oil inside. Let the old filter drain into the pan.

Clean the Filter Housing

Wipe the filter mounting surface with a clean rag. Make sure no rubber gasket from the old filter remains stuck to the engine.

Install the New Filter

Apply a thin layer of fresh oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter. This helps create a good seal. Screw the new filter onto the housing by hand until the gasket touches, then turn it an additional three-quarter turn. Do not use the wrench to tighten it—hand-tight is correct.

Check Your Work

Start the engine and let it run for about a minute. Check around the filter for any leaks. If you see oil dripping, turn off the engine and tighten the filter slightly more. Once you confirm there are no leaks, you're done.

Dispose of Old Oil

Never pour used oil down the drain. Take it to a recycling center, auto parts store, or service station that accepts used oil.
