How to Change the Oil Filter on Your Scion tC or xB

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather these items:

  • A new oil filter (the correct size for your model year)
  • An oil filter wrench or socket
  • A drain pan or container
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Jack and jack stands (if you need to lift the vehicle)
  • Safety glasses

Where the Oil Filter Is Located

On both the tC and xB, the oil filter sits on the side of the engine. You may need to remove the plastic undertray or wheel well cover to reach it easily, depending on your model year. Check your owner's manual for the exact location on your vehicle.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Warm Up Your Engine

Run your engine for a few minutes to warm the oil. Warm oil flows better and drains more completely. Let the engine cool for a few minutes before you start—hot oil can burn you.

Step 2: Position Your Vehicle

Park on a flat, level surface. If needed, use a jack and jack stands to safely lift the vehicle. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.

Step 3: Locate and Loosen the Filter

Place your drain pan underneath the filter. Use your oil filter wrench to turn the filter counterclockwise until it's loose. Finish unscrewing it by hand, being careful because oil may still drip out.

Step 4: Clean the Filter Housing

Wipe the filter housing (the part where the old filter screwed on) with a clean rag. Remove any dirt or old rubber from the seal.

Step 5: Install the New Filter

Apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter. Screw the filter on by hand until the gasket touches the housing, then turn it another three-quarters of a turn. Do not use a wrench to tighten it—hand-tight is correct.

Step 6: Check Your Work

Start the engine and let it run for a few seconds. Check around the filter for leaks. If you see oil dripping, turn off the engine and tighten the filter a bit more.

Tips for Success

  • Keep a rag handy—oil can be messy
  • Don't overtighten the new filter; hand-tight plus three-quarters of a turn is the standard
  • Dispose of the old filter properly at an auto parts store or recycling center
  • Check your owner's manual for the recommended filter change interval
