A Guide to Changing Your Toyota Camry's Transmission Fluid
What Is Transmission Fluid and Why It Matters
Transmission fluid keeps your Camry's transmission running smoothly. Over time, this fluid breaks down and gets dirty. Changing it can help your transmission work better and last longer.
Most Toyota Camry owners should change their transmission fluid every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, though you should check your owner's manual for your specific model year.
Tools and Materials You'll Need
Before you start, gather these items:
- New transmission fluid (the correct type for your Camry model year)
- A drain pan
- A wrench or socket set
- A transmission fluid dipstick or fill tube
- A funnel
- Jack and jack stands (if needed to reach the transmission pan)
- Rags or paper towels
- Safety glasses
Step-by-Step Process
1. Prepare Your Camry
Park your Camry on a level surface. Let the engine run for a few minutes, then turn it off. This warms the fluid and makes it drain better. Wait a few minutes for it to cool slightly so you don't burn yourself.
2. Locate the Transmission Pan
Look underneath your Camry toward the middle-bottom of the engine. The transmission pan is a large metal container. You may need to raise your Camry safely with a jack to reach it easily.
3. Drain the Old Fluid
Place your drain pan under the transmission pan. Loosen the bolts around the edge of the pan using your wrench. Once loose, carefully unscrew them by hand. Tilt the pan gently to let the old fluid drain completely into your drain pan.
4. Replace the Filter and Gasket
Most transmission pans have a filter inside. Remove the old filter and replace it with a new one. Also replace the rubber gasket on the pan with a new gasket. This prevents leaks.
5. Reinstall the Pan
Clean the pan with a rag. Position the new gasket on the pan. Carefully place the pan back under the transmission and hand-tighten the bolts. Then use your wrench to tighten them in a crisscross pattern, like tightening a car wheel. Don't over-tighten.
6. Add New Fluid
Locate your transmission's fill tube or dipstick. Place a funnel in the opening. Slowly pour the new transmission fluid into the funnel. Check your owner's manual for the correct amount.
7. Check the Fluid Level
Start your engine and let it run for a minute. Check the fluid level with the dipstick. Add more fluid if needed to reach the proper level shown on the dipstick.
Important Safety Tips
- Transmission fluid is hot after running—be careful not to touch it or let it splash on your skin
- Dispose of old transmission fluid properly at a recycling center or auto parts store
- Work in a well-ventilated area
- Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes
- If you're unsure at any point, consult your owner's manual or contact a mechanic
When to Call a Professional
If you don't feel confident doing this work yourself, or if you run into problems, a Toyota dealer or trusted mechanic can handle this task for you. Some Camry models may have different procedures, so checking your specific year's manual is always a smart idea.
