A Guide to Changing Your Volvo's Oil
Why Oil Changes Matter for Your Volvo
Oil keeps your Volvo's engine running smoothly. Over time, oil breaks down and collects dirt and debris. Changing your oil regularly helps your engine last longer and run better. Most Volvo owners change their oil every 10,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. Check your owner's manual for your specific vehicle's schedule.
What You'll Need
Before you start, gather these items:
- New oil (the correct type and amount for your Volvo model)
- A new oil filter
- An oil drain pan
- A wrench or socket set
- An oil filter wrench
- Jack and jack stands (if needed to access the drain plug)
- Rags or paper towels
- Safety glasses
Your owner's manual will tell you which oil type and weight your Volvo needs. Don't guess on this—using the wrong oil can damage your engine.
Step-by-Step: Changing Your Oil
1. Warm Up Your Engine
Start your Volvo and let it run for a few minutes. Warm oil flows better than cold oil. Then turn off the engine and wait a few minutes before starting work.
2. Locate and Remove the Drain Plug
Look under your Volvo for the oil drain plug. It's a bolt on the bottom of the oil pan. Place your drain pan underneath it. Use a wrench to loosen the plug by turning it counterclockwise. Once it's loose, carefully unscrew it by hand. Be careful—the oil may still be warm. Let all the old oil drain into the pan. This may take several minutes.
3. Replace the Drain Plug
Once the oil has stopped dripping, wipe the drain plug clean with a rag. Screw it back in by hand until it's snug. Don't overtighten it—you could strip the threads.
4. Change the Oil Filter
Find your oil filter. It's a cylindrical part connected to the engine. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen it by turning counterclockwise. Once it's loose, unscrew it by hand. A little oil may spill out—that's normal. Wipe the filter mounting surface clean. Take your new filter and apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket on top. Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then turn it another three-quarter turn. Don't use the wrench to tighten it.
5. Add New Oil
Open your hood and locate the oil filler cap on top of the engine. Twist it counterclockwise and remove it. Pour in the recommended amount of new oil. Put the cap back on and twist it clockwise until it's snug.
6. Check Your Work
Start your engine and let it run for about a minute. Watch for any leaks around the drain plug and filter. Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes. Then pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, and pull it out again to check the oil level. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks.
A Few Safety Tips
- Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes
- Never work under a car supported only by a jack—always use jack stands
- Dispose of old oil properly. Many auto parts stores and service stations take used oil for free
- Keep your workspace clean and organized
When to Call a Professional
If you're not comfortable working under your car, or if you run into problems you don't understand, take your Volvo to a mechanic. An oil change is a routine job, and a professional can handle it quickly and safely.
