How to Change Oil in Your Briggs & Stratton Generator

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter

Oil keeps your generator's engine running smoothly. Over time, oil breaks down and collects dirt and debris. Changing the oil regularly helps your generator last longer and run better. Most Briggs & Stratton generators need an oil change every 50 to 100 hours of use, or at least once a year if you don't use it much.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather these items:

  • New oil (check your owner's manual for the right type and amount)
  • An oil drain pan
  • A wrench or socket set
  • An oil filter wrench (if your model has a filter)
  • A new oil filter (if your model has one)
  • Rags or paper towels
  • A funnel

Steps to Change Your Oil

1. Prepare Your Generator

Let your generator cool down for at least 5 to 10 minutes after running it. The engine should be warm but not hot—this helps the old oil flow out more easily. Turn off the generator and make sure it's on a level surface.

2. Locate the Drain Plug

Find the oil drain plug on the bottom or side of your engine. Your owner's manual shows exactly where it is. Place your drain pan underneath the plug to catch the old oil.

3. Drain the Old Oil

Use your wrench to loosen the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise. Once it's loose enough, you can unscrew it by hand. Let all the old oil drain into the pan. This may take a few minutes. Wipe the drain plug clean with a rag.

4. Replace the Oil Filter (If Applicable)

Some Briggs & Stratton models have an oil filter. If yours does, use an oil filter wrench to turn it counterclockwise and remove it. Wipe the filter mounting surface clean. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber ring on the new filter, then screw it on by hand until it's snug.

5. Install the Drain Plug

Screw the drain plug back in by hand, then tighten it with your wrench. Don't overtighten it—just make it snug.

6. Add New Oil

Place the funnel in the oil fill opening on top of the engine. Slowly pour in the new oil. Check your owner's manual for the correct amount. Most small generators need between 0.6 and 2 quarts.

7. Check the Oil Level

Wait a minute for the oil to settle. Use the dipstick to check the level. It should reach the "full" mark. Add a bit more if needed.

8. Run Your Generator

Start your generator and let it run for a minute. Turn it off and wait a few minutes. Check the oil level again to make sure it's still at the right level.

Disposing of Old Oil

Never pour old oil down the drain or into the ground. Take it to a local recycling center, auto parts store, or service station. Many of these places take used oil for free.

Tips for Success

  • Always read your owner's manual before starting. Different models may have slight differences.
  • Keep your generator level while draining oil so it all comes out.
  • Don't overfill the oil—too much oil can damage your engine.
  • Write down the date and hours when you change the oil so you remember when the next change is due.
