Step-by-Step Guide to Changing Oil in Your Ryobi Generator

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter for Your Generator

Keeping your Ryobi generator running smoothly means taking care of its engine. Oil changes are one of the most important maintenance tasks you can do. Fresh oil keeps the engine parts moving freely, reduces wear, and helps your generator last longer.

Most Ryobi generators need an oil change every 50 to 100 hours of use, or at least once a year if you don't use it that often. Check your owner's manual for the exact schedule for your model.

What You'll Need Before You Start

Gather these items before beginning:

  • The correct oil type and amount (check your manual—usually SAE 10W-30 or 15W-40)
  • An oil drain pan or container
  • A wrench or socket set to fit the drain plug
  • A new oil filter (if your model has one)
  • An oil filter wrench (if needed)
  • Clean rags or paper towels
  • A funnel

Prepare Your Generator

Safety comes first. Turn off the generator and let it cool for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Hot oil can burn you. Make sure the generator is on level ground and stable before you work on it.

Drain the Old Oil

Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom or side of the engine. Place your drain pan underneath it. Use your wrench to loosen the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise. Once it's loose enough, carefully unscrew it by hand and let the old oil flow into the pan. This may take a few minutes.

Once the oil stops dripping, wipe the drain plug clean with a rag and set it aside.

Replace the Oil Filter (If Your Model Has One)

If your Ryobi generator has an oil filter, locate it on the engine. Use an oil filter wrench to turn it counterclockwise until it comes free. Slowly unscrew it the rest of the way by hand, being careful not to spill oil.

Before installing the new filter, rub a thin layer of fresh oil around the rubber gasket on top of the new filter. This helps create a good seal. Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the engine, then turn it about three-quarters of a turn more. Do not over-tighten it.

Install the Drain Plug

Screw the drain plug back in by hand first, then use your wrench to tighten it. Don't make it too tight—you just want it snug enough that it won't leak.

Add New Oil

Locate the oil fill cap on top of the engine and unscrew it. Place a funnel in the opening. Slowly pour in the new oil. Check your manual to see exactly how much your model needs.

After adding oil, wait a minute for it to settle. Then remove the funnel and check the oil level using the dipstick. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Add a bit more if needed, then replace the oil fill cap.

Run and Check

Start your generator and let it run for a minute or two. This circulates the new oil through the engine. Turn it off and wait a few minutes, then check the oil level again with the dipstick. It may have gone down slightly as the new oil fills the filter and engine passages. Add more if needed.

Dispose of your old oil properly. Many auto parts stores and recycling centers take used oil for free.

Keep Track of Maintenance

Write down the date and hours when you changed the oil so you know when the next change is due. Staying on top of oil changes keeps your Ryobi generator in good working order.
