Free Guide to Sending Money to Chime Accounts

Understanding Chime and How Money Transfers Work

Chime is a financial technology company that offers banking services through a mobile app and debit card. Unlike traditional brick-and-mortar banks, Chime operates primarily online, which means customers manage their accounts through smartphones or computers. The company partners with established banks to hold customer funds, so deposits are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) up to $250,000.

When someone wants to send money to a Chime account, they're essentially transferring funds into a checking or savings account that exists in the Chime app. This process differs from sending money through payment apps like Venmo or Cash App in one key way: you're moving funds into an actual bank account rather than a payment app wallet. This means the money lands in a deposit account, not a temporary holding space.

Chime accounts include a routing number and account number, just like any traditional bank account. These numbers are essential for receiving transfers. You can find this information in the Chime app by navigating to the account settings or checking your digital statements. The routing number identifies which bank holds the account, while the account number identifies your specific account.

Understanding the basics helps you choose the right transfer method for your situation. Different methods work better depending on whether you're sending money locally, nationally, internationally, or on a time-sensitive basis. Some methods are free but slower, while others cost money but move funds more quickly. Knowing your options prevents confusion and helps you avoid unnecessary fees.

Practical Takeaway: Before sending money to a Chime account, ask the recipient for their routing number and account number. Verify these numbers are correct—even one digit wrong can cause the transfer to fail or reach the wrong account. You can also ask the recipient to confirm their account details from their Chime app settings to double-check accuracy.

Method 1: Bank-to-Bank Transfers Using Routing and Account Numbers

The most straightforward way to send money to a Chime account is through a standard bank-to-bank transfer, also called an ACH transfer (Automated Clearing House). If you have a checking or savings account at a traditional bank or credit union, you can initiate this transfer directly from your bank's website or mobile app. This method works with virtually any U.S. bank and typically costs nothing.

To complete this transfer, log into your bank's online banking platform and look for an option like "Transfer Funds," "Send Money," or "Pay People." You'll then need to add the Chime account as a receiving account. Most banks ask you to provide the recipient's name, routing number, and account number. For Chime accounts, the routing number is 221180379 (this is Chime's partner bank routing number for most accounts, though some Chime accounts may have different routing numbers depending on the bank partnership).

After you enter the recipient's information, your bank typically verifies the account by making two small deposits—usually between $0.01 and $0.99 each—to the Chime account. The recipient must confirm the amounts of these test deposits in the Chime app or their original bank. This verification process typically takes one to two business days. Once verified, you can send money to that account anytime without repeating the verification process.

Bank-to-bank transfers through ACH normally take two to three business days to complete. The money leaves your account on day one, processes through the clearing house on day two, and arrives in the Chime account by day three. Weekends and holidays extend this timeline. This method is free and secure because your bank directly transfers funds rather than routing them through a third party.

Practical Takeaway: Before making a large transfer, send a small test amount first. This confirms that the routing and account numbers are correct and that the recipient can access the funds. After the test transfer succeeds, you'll feel more confident sending larger amounts.

Method 2: Using Third-Party Payment Platforms and Apps

Several payment platforms make it possible to send money to Chime accounts. Services like PayPal, Square Cash, and others allow you to link a Chime account as your receiving account, then send money from another payment method like a credit card, debit card, or bank account. These platforms provide an alternative if you don't want to use direct bank transfers or if you prefer managing everything through a single app.

PayPal is one of the most widely used options. To receive money through PayPal into a Chime account, you link your Chime debit card to PayPal as your receiving account. Money sent to your PayPal account then deposits into your Chime account. The timeline and fees depend on which PayPal service you use—standard transfers are free but take several business days, while expedited options cost money but move funds faster.

Stripe, a platform often used by small businesses and freelancers, also supports Chime accounts. If you receive payments through Stripe for work or sales, you can link your Chime account as your payout account. Stripe deposits earnings directly into Chime several times per week, depending on your account settings. This works well for people receiving regular payments from clients or customers rather than one-time transfers from friends or family.

Google Pay and Apple Pay present another option for sending money between individuals who have Chime accounts. Both services allow you to send money to contacts using their phone number or email address. The recipient's Chime account receives the funds, typically within minutes or hours. However, these services work best when both parties already use the platform and have completed their setup.

Practical Takeaway: When choosing a payment platform, compare fees, transfer speed, and whether both you and the recipient use that platform. A free method that takes five business days may be better than a fast method that costs $5 if you're not in a hurry. Check the platform's current terms, as fees and policies change regularly.

Method 3: Wire Transfers and Same-Day Options

When you need money to reach a Chime account very quickly, a wire transfer is an option. Wire transfers move money within hours rather than days, making them useful for urgent situations like paying deposits or covering unexpected expenses. You can initiate a wire transfer from most banks, credit unions, and some online financial services.

To send a wire transfer to a Chime account, contact your bank and provide the recipient's routing number, account number, and name. You'll need to specify the exact amount and may need to visit a branch in person or complete the request through your bank's online platform, depending on the bank's policies. Most banks charge a wire transfer fee, typically ranging from $15 to $50 per outgoing wire transfer. The receiving bank may also charge a fee.

International wire transfers to Chime accounts are possible if the recipient has a Chime account in the United States, but these involve additional complexity. The sender would use an international wire service through their bank, providing SWIFT codes and additional information. International wires take longer than domestic wires—often several business days—and involve significantly higher fees, sometimes $25 to $75 or more. Most people use international wire transfers only when necessary because of these costs.

Some newer fintech services offer same-day transfer options at lower costs than traditional wire transfers. For example, some banks participate in the RTP (Real-Time Payments) network, which allows funds to move within minutes. However, not all banks and services support RTP yet, so it's worth asking your bank if this option is available. These services typically charge little or nothing compared to wire transfer fees.

Practical Takeaway: Only use wire transfers when you truly need same-day or next-day delivery. The fees can be substantial, and once sent, wire transfers are difficult to reverse. For routine money transfers between friends or family, standard bank transfers are usually more cost-effective and serve the purpose well.

Method 4: Chime Direct Deposit and Employer Transfers

Chime accounts support direct deposit from employers, which means you can have your paycheck deposited directly into your Chime account instead of a traditional bank. This method requires no action on the recipient's part after the initial setup—the employer or payroll company handles everything. For people receiving regular paychecks, this is one of the most convenient ways money reaches a Chime account.
