Understanding Online LPN Programs: What They Are and How They Work
A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a healthcare professional who works under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and physicians. LPNs provide patient care in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and home healthcare settings. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were approximately 680,000 LPN jobs in 2022, with an expected growth rate of 4% through 2032.

Online LPN programs teach the same clinical knowledge and skills as traditional classroom-based programs, but deliver instruction through digital platforms. These programs typically combine online coursework with hands-on clinical practice that takes place in-person at healthcare facilities. The online portion covers subjects such as anatomy, pharmacology, patient care techniques, medical-surgical nursing, pediatric nursing, and mental health nursing.
Most online LPN programs take between 12 to 24 months to complete, depending on whether you attend full-time or part-time. Full-time students typically finish in about 12 to 18 months, while part-time students may take up to 24 months. The total program usually requires around 1,200 to 1,500 hours of instruction, including both classroom learning and clinical practice hours.
Online LPN programs are offered by community colleges, vocational schools, technical institutes, and some four-year universities. The program must be accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for graduates to be permitted to take the licensing exam in their state.
After completing an online LPN program, graduates must pass the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses) to become licensed. This exam tests knowledge of nursing fundamentals, pharmacology, and patient care across different medical specialties. States set their own passing scores, but the exam is standardized across the country.
Takeaway: Online LPN programs combine flexible digital learning with required in-person clinical training. Research whether programs in your area are accredited by ACEN or CCNE before enrolling, as this affects your ability to sit for the licensing exam.
Program Requirements and Prerequisites
Before enrolling in an online LPN program, students must typically meet certain baseline requirements. Most programs require a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate. Some programs may accept students who have completed a certain number of college-level coursework, though this is less common for LPN programs.

Common prerequisites include courses in anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and microbiology. Not all online LPN programs require these courses before admission, but many students find that completing them beforehand makes the nursing coursework less challenging. If your program doesn't require prerequisites, you may take these courses as part of your overall program.
Many online LPN programs also require background checks and drug screenings before admission and before beginning clinical rotations. This is because students will work directly with patients in healthcare settings. Some programs may require immunizations, such as vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), as well as tuberculosis (TB) testing. These requirements exist to protect patients and ensure a safe clinical environment.
Physical and technical requirements are also important to consider. Students need reliable internet access with minimum speeds of 5 to 10 megabits per second (Mbps) for video streaming and participation in live classes. You'll need a computer or laptop (most programs specify Windows or Mac compatibility), a webcam, microphone, and headphones. Some programs provide specific software requirements or learning management systems that you must use.
Certain states have specific requirements for LPN licensure that may affect your program choice. For example, some states require that a certain percentage of clinical hours be completed in specific settings or that certain procedures be performed under direct supervision. Before enrolling in an online program, research your state's Board of Nursing website to understand these requirements.
Takeaway: Gather your high school diploma or GED, verify any prerequisite course requirements, and ensure you have adequate internet speed and computer equipment. Contact your state's Board of Nursing to learn about any state-specific requirements that might affect your program choice.
Types of Funding Programs and Financial Resources
Paying for an online LPN program can seem overwhelming, but numerous funding options exist. Understanding each type helps you plan your education finances strategically. Federal student loans, grants, scholarships, employer tuition assistance, and payment plans are common ways students finance nursing education.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a starting point for exploring federal financial aid. When you complete the FAFSA, you may become considered for several types of aid: Pell Grants, Federal Direct Loans, and Federal PLUS Loans. Pell Grants are need-based and do not require repayment, while loans must be repaid with interest after graduation. The maximum Pell Grant for the 2024-2025 academic year was $7,395, though amounts vary based on your financial situation and enrollment status.
Federal Direct Loans for students come in two types: subsidized and unsubsidized. With subsidized loans, the federal government pays the interest while you're in school. With unsubsidized loans, interest begins accumulating from the date the loan is disbursed. As of July 2024, the interest rate for undergraduate loans was 8.05%. Borrowing limits depend on your year in school and your dependency status.
State grants and scholarships vary significantly by location. Many states offer financial aid specifically for healthcare profession training. For example, some states have loan repayment programs for nurses who commit to working in underserved areas or rural communities. Contact your state's higher education agency or your state's Board of Nursing to learn what programs may be available where you live.
Private scholarships are offered by nursing organizations, foundations, and private companies. Organizations like the National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Service (NAPNES) and the National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses (NFLPN) offer scholarships to prospective and current LPN students. Scholarship amounts range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Many require essays, letters of recommendation, or documentation of financial need.
Takeaway: Start by completing the FAFSA to explore federal aid options. Then search state-specific nursing scholarships and contact your school's financial aid office about institutional aid and payment plans that may help reduce your out-of-pocket costs.
Employer and Military Funding Opportunities
Many employers offer tuition assistance programs that help employees finance education related to their current job or a new career. Healthcare employers, in particular, frequently sponsor nursing education because the healthcare industry has significant staffing shortages. If you work in a hospital, clinic, nursing home, or other healthcare setting, ask your human resources department whether tuition reimbursement programs exist.

Typical employer tuition programs cover between 50% and 100% of tuition and fees. Some programs require you to maintain a certain GPA or work for the employer for a specified time after graduation (often one to three years). If you leave before this period ends, you may be required to repay part or all of the tuition assistance. Understanding these terms beforehand prevents surprises later.
The Veterans Affairs (VA) offers several educational funding programs for military service members and veterans. The GI Bill provides tuition coverage for eligible service members and their dependents. The Post-9/11 GI Bill covers 100% of tuition and fees at public institutions and provides a monthly housing allowance and book stipend. For the 2024-2025 academic year, the monthly housing allowance averaged $2,000 to $2,500 for full-time students, depending on location.
Military service members on active duty may also explore the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard's tuition assistance programs. These programs typically cover up to $250 per semester credit hour and allow service members to pursue education while stationed. Some branches have specific programs targeting healthcare professions to address military medical staffing needs.
If you're a National Guard member or in the Reserves, the State Tuition Assistance Program may provide additional funding. Amounts and eligibility vary by state, so contact your unit's education office to learn about available programs in your state.
