Learn About Seattle Seahawks Season Records and History

The Seattle Seahawks' Foundation and Early Years (1976-2001)

The Seattle Seahawks began their history in 1976 as an expansion franchise in the NFL's NFC West division. The team played their first season at the newly built Kingdome, a domed stadium in downtown Seattle. That inaugural 1976 season saw the Seahawks go 2-14, which was typical for an expansion team learning to compete against established franchises. The team struggled through their early years, posting losing records throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, though they did make the playoffs in 1987 with a 9-6 record during the strike-shortened season.

One of the most memorable moments in early Seahawks history came during the 1983 season when they reached the AFC Championship Game, even though they were actually an NFC team. This unusual occurrence happened because the Seahawks switched conferences that year due to the NFL's realignment—they moved from the NFC to the AFC West. In that championship game, they faced the Los Angeles Raiders but lost 30-14. The team continued to have moderate success through the 1980s and 1990s with players like Dave Krieg at quarterback and Curt Warner at running back.

The late 1990s and early 2000s marked a transition period for the franchise. The Seahawks moved to the newly constructed Qwest Field (now Lumen Field) in 2002, leaving the Kingdome after 25 seasons. This move to a new stadium represented hope for a fresh start. However, before this stadium transition could take hold, the team needed to find the right leadership and talent to build a winning culture. The early 2000s saw some improvement, but consistent playoff success remained elusive during this period.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding the Seahawks' early history shows how expansion teams develop over time. The franchise went from a winless start to becoming a competitive playoff team, demonstrating that organizational growth takes patience, multiple coaching changes, and strategic player acquisitions. This foundation period shaped the team's identity in the Pacific Northwest and established a fan base that would grow substantially in later decades.

The Mike Holmgren Era and Return to Competitiveness (2002-2008)

When Mike Holmgren was hired as head coach before the 2002 season, the Seahawks organization began a significant transformation. Holmgren came with extensive coaching experience and a Super Bowl championship pedigree from his time with the Green Bay Packers. He immediately made an impact on team culture and player discipline. In his first season with the new Qwest Field, Holmgren led the Seahawks to a 9-7 record and a playoff appearance, which represented substantial improvement from previous seasons. This showed the team was heading in the right direction.

The 2003 and 2004 seasons brought further progress. In 2003, the Seahawks went 10-6 and made the playoffs again. In 2004, they achieved their first 10-win season since their early competitive years, finishing 10-6 but missing the playoffs. The following year, 2005, proved to be a breakthrough season. The Seahawks went 13-3, won the NFC West division, and made a remarkable playoff run that took them all the way to Super Bowl XL. In that Super Bowl, played in Jacksonville, Florida, they faced the heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers but came up short, losing 21-10.

Even though the Super Bowl was a loss, reaching that championship game proved the Seahawks had become a legitimate contender. The team made the playoffs in 2006 and 2007 as well, showing consistency. Players like Matt Hasselbeck at quarterback, Shaun Alexander at running back, and a strong defense led by defensive end Shaun Kemp became recognizable names around the NFL. The organization had finally shed its losing reputation and established itself as a team that could compete for championships.

Practical Takeaway: The Holmgren era demonstrates how coaching philosophy, organizational structure, and strategic personnel moves can quickly transform a franchise. Going from a rebuilding team to Super Bowl contenders in just three years shows that winning can accelerate when the right pieces come together. Fans looking to understand how the Seahawks became Seattle's premier sports franchise should study this period closely.

The Jim Mora Years and Inconsistency (2009-2011)

After Mike Holmgren departed, the Seahawks hired Jim Mora as their new head coach in 2009. This transition marked a period of struggle and inconsistency. The 2009 season saw the Seahawks post a 5-11 record, a dramatic decline from the previous competitive seasons. Mora's first year brought disappointment to fans who had grown accustomed to playoff football. The following year, 2010, brought slight improvement to 7-9, but the team still missed the playoffs. The 2011 season saw another 7-9 record, indicating a pattern of middling performance.

During the Mora years, the team cycled through quarterbacks, trying to find stability at the position. Charlie Whitehurst, Matt Flynn, and Tarvaris Jackson all took turns leading the offense. This quarterback carousel made it difficult to establish consistency on offense. The defense, which had been a strength under Holmgren, also declined during this period. Notable veteran players from the Super Bowl run were aging, and the organization struggled to replace them with younger talent through the draft.

The 2011 season proved to be the breaking point. With another losing season and mounting frustration from the fan base, team ownership decided to make significant changes. The organization recognized that a new direction was needed. This period, while painful for fans, ultimately set the stage for one of the most dramatic turnarounds in modern NFL history. Sometimes organizations must hit bottom before they can rebuild on a stronger foundation with fresh personnel and a new coaching vision.

Practical Takeaway: Seasons of inconsistency teach important lessons about organizational stability. The Mora era shows that even after achieving Super Bowl success, maintaining that level requires continuous attention to roster building and coaching excellence. The Seahawks' inability to sustain success during this period contributed valuable learning experiences that shaped decisions made in the next chapter of franchise history.

The Pete Carroll Era Begins (2012-2014 Super Bowl Winners)

In 2012, the Seahawks made a bold hiring decision by bringing in Pete Carroll as head coach. Carroll had been coaching at the University of Southern California and brought an energetic, player-friendly approach to professional football. More importantly, he had clear ideas about building a defense-first culture. His first season was remarkable: the Seahawks went 11-5, won the NFC West, and made the playoffs. This rapid improvement suggested the team had found the right leadership. Carroll's emphasis on aggressive defense and a younger player core resonated throughout the organization.

The 2013 season took things to another level. The Seahawks finished 13-3 and had one of the most dominant defenses in NFL history. This defense, featuring the "Legion of Boom" secondary with players like Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Kam Chancellor, became legendary. Their ability to force turnovers and create chaos for opposing quarterbacks was unmatched. The team made a deep playoff run, winning the NFC Championship and advancing to Super Bowl XLVIII against the Denver Broncos. In that game, played in New Jersey, the Seahawks dominated 43-8, capturing their first-ever Super Bowl championship. The 2013 season represents the pinnacle of Seahawks franchise history to that point.

The 2014 season brought another stellar campaign. The Seahawks went 12-4 and returned to Super Bowl XLIX to face the New England Patriots. In one of the most controversial endings in Super Bowl history, the Patriots won 28-24 when a last-minute interception stopped Seattle's attempt to score at the goal line. Despite the loss, back-to-back Super Bowl appearances cemented the Seahawks as an elite franchise. During this era, the team also had dynamic running back Marshawn Lynch, whose powerful rushing style perfectly complemented the team's identity. Carroll had transformed the Seahawks into perennial contenders.

Practical Takeaway: Pete Carroll's arrival shows how coaching philosophy, player personnel decisions, and organizational culture can create sustained excellence. The Seahawks' 2013-2014 dominance resulted from having exceptional defensive talent, smart offensive execution, and a clear identity. Understanding this
