Learn About Your DMV Points and Driving Record
Understanding DMV Points and How They Work
Your driving record is a history kept by your state's Department of Motor Vehicles that tracks your driving behavior. One key part of this record is a point system that most states use to monitor traffic violations. When you get a traffic ticket, the DMV assigns points to your license based on the violation type. These points stay on your record for a specific number of years, typically three to seven years depending on your state and the offense.

The point system exists to encourage safe driving. Minor violations like speeding might add one or two points, while serious offenses like reckless driving or driving under the influence could add four, six, or more points. Different states have different point values for the same offense. For example, a speeding ticket might be worth two points in one state and three points in another.
When your point total reaches a certain threshold—often between 12 and 18 points depending on your state and age—your license may be suspended. A suspension means you cannot legally drive for a set period. If you accumulate even more points after a suspension, you might face license revocation, which is more serious and longer-lasting than a suspension.
Points also affect your insurance rates. Insurance companies review your driving record and charge higher premiums to drivers with points. A single speeding ticket might raise your rates by 10 to 25 percent, while serious violations can increase rates by 50 percent or more. Some insurance companies offer discounts if you go several years without violations.
Practical takeaway: Request a copy of your driving record from your state DMV to see what points, if any, are currently on your license. You can often order this online, by mail, or in person. Review it for accuracy and contact the DMV if you spot errors.
Common Traffic Violations and Their Point Values
Different violations carry different point penalties. Understanding which infractions are worth more points helps you grasp how quickly your record can accumulate violations. Minor infractions—those that don't endanger other drivers—typically result in one to two points. These include improper lane changes, expired registration, parking violations, or failing to use turn signals.

Moderate violations generally add two to four points to your record. Examples include speeding (typically 15 miles per hour or more over the limit), improper passing, tailgating, or running a red light. These violations show careless or inattentive driving but don't involve drugs, alcohol, or extreme recklessness.
Serious moving violations can add four to eight points or more. Reckless driving, driving with a suspended or revoked license, and hit-and-run incidents fall into this category. In many states, these violations can result in immediate license suspension even on a first offense.
The most serious violations—typically involving alcohol, drugs, or criminal negligence—can add six to twelve points or result in automatic license suspension. Driving under the influence (DUI), driving while impaired, and vehicular assault are examples. A first DUI offense often comes with automatic license suspension for three to six months or longer, plus substantial point additions.
It's important to note that point values vary significantly by state. A violation that adds three points in California might add four points in New York. Additionally, your age matters in some states. Younger drivers (often under 18 or 21) may face stricter point thresholds and accumulate points faster toward suspension.
Practical takeaway: Check your state's DMV website for an official chart showing point values for specific violations. Having this reference helps you understand the real consequences of traffic tickets and make informed decisions about contesting tickets or paying them.
How to Obtain and Review Your Driving Record
Your driving record is a public document, though access is limited to you, authorized government agencies, insurance companies, and employers with your permission. Every state allows you to obtain a copy of your own record, and doing so is the only way to know exactly what information the DMV has about you.

Most states offer three ways to request your record. The fastest option is typically online through the state DMV website. You'll need your driver's license number and date of birth, and sometimes a credit card to pay a small fee (usually between $2 and $15). Online requests often take one to three business days for processing.
You can also request your record by mail. This involves filling out a form, including a copy of your license, and sending it to the DMV address listed on the state website. Mail requests typically take one to two weeks. Many states also allow in-person requests at local DMV offices, which can sometimes be processed the same day, though you may wait in line.
When you receive your record, review it carefully for accuracy. Common errors include violations attributed to you that you didn't commit, incorrect conviction dates, or violations that should have dropped off after the retention period expired. Mistakes can happen due to clerical errors, name confusion, or identity theft.
Your record will show your full driving history in your state. It lists every moving violation, suspension, revocation, and conviction. It will show the date of each violation, the location, the charge, and the outcome (whether you paid, contested it, or were found guilty). Some records also show insurance claims you've reported to your insurance company, depending on your state's laws.
Practical takeaway: Request your driving record once per year to monitor its accuracy. If you find errors, contact the DMV with documentation (like court records) showing the correction needed. Correcting errors quickly can prevent problems if you're pulled over or apply for a job requiring a clean record.
Point Suspension and License Consequences
When your accumulated points reach your state's threshold, the DMV will suspend your license. A suspension is typically temporary, lasting from one month to one year depending on how many points you've accumulated and whether you have previous suspensions. During a suspension, you cannot legally drive. Driving with a suspended license is itself a violation that adds more points and can result in arrest, fines, and even jail time.

Different states set different point thresholds. In New York, 11 points result in a suspension. In California, accumulating four or more violations within a 12-month period can lead to suspension consideration, though California doesn't use a traditional point system. Some states have different thresholds for different age groups, with younger drivers facing suspension at lower point totals.
A suspension notice arrives by mail before your license is suspended, usually giving you 10 to 30 days warning. The notice explains why your license is being suspended, when it will be suspended, and what you must do to restore it after the suspension period ends. It's crucial to take this notice seriously—continuing to drive after the suspension date begins is illegal.
License revocation is different from suspension and more serious. While a suspension is temporary, a revocation means your license is cancelled and you must reapply to get another one. Revocations can result from multiple suspensions, serious violations like DUI convictions, or accumulating too many points too quickly. Depending on the reason and your state's laws, you may not be able to reapply for one to ten years.
During a suspension or revocation period, you typically cannot hold a commercial driver's license (CDL) either. If your job requires driving, a suspension or revocation can end your employment. Some states offer hardship licenses or restricted driving privileges that allow you to drive for work or medical purposes during a suspension, though these have strict limitations.
Practical takeaway: If you receive a suspension notice, don't ignore it. Read it completely to understand the suspension date and what you must do afterward. Many states require you to pay a reinstatement fee and satisfy other conditions (like completing a defensive driving course) before your license is restored.
How Violations Stay on Your Record and Point Removal
Points don't stay on your driving record forever. Each state sets a "retention period" that determines how long violations remain visible. These periods vary widely. Some states keep violations for three years, others for five, seven, or even ten years. Minor violations like parking tickets may drop off sooner than moving violations.

In many states, points automatically disappear after the retention period ends, but the conviction itself may remain on your record longer for insurance purposes. For example, a violation might have points removed after five years but stay on your record for seven years, affecting insurance rates even after the points are gone.
