Learn How to Change Your Home Page Online
Understanding What a Home Page Is and Why You Might Want to Change It
Your home page is the first webpage that appears when you open your web browser. Think of it like the front door to your online experience. Every time you launch your browser—whether you're using Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, or another browser—it automatically loads this designated page. For many people, the default home page is set by their browser manufacturer or internet service provider, but you have the option to personalize this to something that works better for your daily routine.

Understanding why you might want to change your home page helps you make decisions about what would be most useful. Some people prefer to see a search engine like Google or Bing so they can quickly search the internet. Others want to see their email inbox, news updates, or a custom page with links to websites they visit frequently. Students might want their school's portal, while professionals might prefer LinkedIn or their company's internal site. The choice depends entirely on how you use the internet and what information you want to see first thing when you open your browser.
Different browsers store home page settings in different locations, which is important to know before you start making changes. The process is generally straightforward, but the exact steps vary based on which browser you use and whether you're accessing the settings through your browser menu or through a dedicated settings page. Understanding these differences prevents confusion and ensures you're changing the right setting.
Practical takeaway: Before making changes, think about which website you visit most frequently or which information you want to see immediately when opening your browser. This will guide your decision about what to set as your home page.
How to Change Your Home Page in Google Chrome
Google Chrome is one of the most widely used web browsers, with millions of users worldwide. Changing your home page in Chrome involves accessing the browser settings through a menu button in the top right corner of the window. The process typically takes less than five minutes and requires only a few clicks. Chrome offers several options for what can be displayed as your home page: you can show a blank page, your most visited websites, your open tabs, or a custom webpage that you specify.

To begin, look for the three vertical dots (often called the menu button or hamburger menu) in the upper right corner of your Chrome window. Click on this button to open a dropdown menu. From this menu, select "Settings." This will open a new tab that contains all of Chrome's configuration options. On the left side of the Settings page, you'll see several categories listed vertically. Look for and click on "On startup" in this left-side menu. This section controls what happens when you open Chrome.
Once you're in the "On startup" section, you'll see three radio button options. The first option says "Continue where you left off," which means Chrome will reopen all the tabs and windows you had open the last time you closed the browser. The second option is "Open the New Tab page," which shows a blank page with shortcuts to your most visited sites and Chrome's search bar. The third option is "Open a specific page or set of pages," which allows you to enter custom URLs. Click on the third option if you want to set a specific website as your home page.
After selecting "Open a specific page or set of pages," you'll see a field appear that says "Add a new page." Click on this field and enter the complete web address (URL) of the website you want as your home page. For example, you might type "www.google.com" or "www.bbc.com/news" or any other website address. You can add multiple pages if you want several websites to open when you start Chrome. Once you've entered the URL, press Enter or click the checkmark button to confirm your choice. Chrome automatically saves your changes, so you don't need to click a separate "Save" button.
Practical takeaway: Write down the exact URL of the website you want to use before opening Chrome settings, so you can type it accurately without searching. This prevents mistakes and speeds up the process.
Changing Your Home Page in Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Firefox is another popular browser used by millions of people globally, known for its focus on privacy and customization options. Changing your home page in Firefox is similar in concept to Chrome but uses a slightly different menu structure and terminology. Firefox uses the term "Home" to describe the page that appears when you open a new tab or new window, depending on your settings. The Firefox home page can show news, your bookmarks, your browsing history, or a completely custom webpage that you choose.

To modify your home page settings in Firefox, click on the menu button—three horizontal lines stacked on top of each other—located in the top right corner of the Firefox window. From the dropdown menu that appears, select "Settings." This opens Firefox's preferences page in a new tab. On the left side of the page, you'll see several sections listed. Click on "Home" to access the home page settings. This is where all the options for customizing your starting page are located.
In the Home section, you'll see options for "New Tabs" and "Home" with different dropdown menus. The "Home" dropdown is the one you want to focus on for changing what appears when you click the home button or open a new window. Click on the dropdown menu next to "Home" to see your options. Firefox typically offers choices like "Firefox Home," which shows news, shortcuts, and recommendations; "Blank Page," which shows nothing; or "Custom URL," which allows you to enter your own website address.
If you select "Custom URL," a text field will appear below the dropdown. Click in this field and type the complete web address of the website you want as your home page. Make sure to include "https://" or "http://" at the beginning of the URL, as Firefox may require this for proper loading. For example, you might enter "https://www.wikipedia.org" or "https://mail.google.com" if you want to see your email inbox first. After entering your URL, your changes are automatically saved in Firefox, similar to Chrome.
Firefox also has an option to set different home pages for new tabs versus new windows if you want different starting pages for each scenario. This advanced customization can be useful if you want a search engine for new tabs but your email for new windows, for instance. Explore these options once you've successfully changed your primary home page.
Practical takeaway: Firefox's "Blank Page" option is useful if you prefer to decide what you want to view each time you open the browser, rather than automatically loading the same page every time.
Changing Your Home Page in Microsoft Edge and Safari
Microsoft Edge is the default browser for Windows computers and has gained popularity in recent years due to its speed and integration with Windows features. Safari is the default browser for Apple devices including Mac computers, iPhones, and iPads. Although these browsers work on different operating systems, the process for changing the home page is similarly straightforward in both. Both browsers allow you to set custom home pages and offer several pre-built options for users who don't want to enter a custom URL.

In Microsoft Edge, start by clicking the menu button—three dots in the top right corner of the window. Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu. On the left side of the Settings page, click on "Start, home, and new tabs" to access the relevant options. You'll see several sections here. Look for the section labeled "Home button" and make sure the toggle switch next to "Show home button" is turned on (the switch should be blue or highlighted). Once the home button is visible, you can customize what it shows. Click on the dropdown menu below the toggle and choose from options like "New tab page," "Previous pages," "A specific page," or "Custom." If you choose "A specific page" or "Custom," enter the URL of your desired home page in the text field that appears.
For Safari on Mac computers, the process is found in the browser's main menu rather than a three-dot icon. Click on "Safari" in the top menu bar (the very top of your screen), then select "Preferences" from the dropdown. A window will open showing various preference categories. Click on the "General" tab if it's not already selected. In the General preferences, you'll see a field labeled "Home page." Click in this field and type the web address of the website you want as your home page. Safari will save this setting automatically when you close the preferences window.
For Safari on iPhone or iPad, the process is different because mobile browsers don't have traditional "home pages" in the same way desktop browsers do. However, you can customize what appears on the Safari start page by going to Settings on your device, scrolling down to find Safari, and selecting it. Look
