Learn How to Pay Your SREMC Electric Bill Online
Understanding SREMC and Online Bill Payment Options
Stokes-Rowan Electric Membership Corporation (SREMC) is a utility cooperative that provides electric service to members across central North Carolina. As a cooperative, SREMC is owned by its members rather than investors, meaning the organization operates for the benefit of the people it serves. SREMC serves more than 65,000 members across a 1,200-square-mile service area in Randolph, Rowan, Stokes, and Surry counties.

Like most modern utilities, SREMC offers online bill payment as a convenience for members who prefer to manage their accounts without visiting a physical location or calling by phone. Online payment allows you to view your bill details, track your payment history, and submit payments from any device with an internet connection. This option has become standard across the utility industry as providers recognize that members value the flexibility and speed of digital transactions.
SREMC members can pay bills through multiple channels: online through the member portal, by phone, through mail, or in person at SREMC offices. The online method tends to be the fastest for processing, typically completing within one business day. Understanding which payment methods are available helps you choose the option that works best for your schedule and preferences.
The cooperative's website serves as the central hub for account management. When you visit the SREMC website, you'll find links to their online payment portal, which is separate from the main website. This separation exists for security reasons—the payment portal uses encrypted technology to protect your financial information.
Practical Takeaway: Familiarize yourself with SREMC's contact information and website before you need to pay a bill. Write down the phone number (typically found on your bill) and bookmark the SREMC website in your browser for easy access later.
Setting Up Your Online Account
Before you can pay your bill online, you need to create or access an existing online account with SREMC. This account serves as your digital gateway to your electric service information. The setup process typically involves providing basic information that matches your SREMC account records.

To begin, locate your most recent SREMC electric bill. Your bill contains your account number, which is essential for creating an online account. The account number appears in the upper portion of the bill, usually in a prominent location. You'll also need your service address—the physical location where you receive electric service—and your zip code. Some utilities also require the last four digits of your Social Security number or the phone number associated with your account.
Visit the SREMC website and look for a link labeled something like "Member Portal," "Online Account," "Pay My Bill," or "Account Login." The exact wording may vary, but these links typically appear prominently on the homepage. Click this link, and you should see options for both existing members logging in and new members creating an account. If you're a new online user, select the option to create a new account.
The account creation process will prompt you to enter your information. Be accurate when typing your details, as the system will verify this information against SREMC's records. Common mistakes include misspelling your name, entering an incorrect account number, or using a different address than what's on file with SREMC. After submitting your information, the system will either confirm your account immediately or send you a confirmation email with next steps.
You'll need to create a username and password for your account. Choose a strong password that contains a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using easily guessed information like your birth date or address. Write down your username and password in a secure location, or use a password manager application that stores this information safely. You'll use these credentials each time you log in to make payments.
Practical Takeaway: Gather your SREMC bill and write down your account number before starting the account creation process. This prevents you from having to search for the number midway through setup.
Logging Into Your Account and Finding Your Bill Information
Once you've created your online account, logging in becomes straightforward. Each time you visit the SREMC website, navigate to the member portal or online payment section. You'll see a login screen asking for your username and password. Enter these details exactly as you created them—note that passwords are case-sensitive, meaning capital and lowercase letters are treated differently.

After logging in successfully, you'll reach a dashboard or home screen that displays your account information. This screen typically shows your current balance, last payment amount, and links to various account features. Most online portals display your information clearly, though the exact layout depends on which system SREMC uses.
Look for a section labeled "Bill," "Current Bill," "Bill Details," or "View Bill." Clicking this section will show you details about your current and past bills. The information displayed usually includes your billing period dates, total charges, payment due date, and a breakdown of charges. You may see charges categorized as energy charges, demand charges (for commercial accounts), taxes, or other fees. This breakdown helps you understand what you're paying for.
Your bill information will show your current balance owed. This is the amount you need to pay to bring your account current. If you have a credit balance—meaning you've overpaid or used less energy than expected—this may also appear, showing a negative balance or credit amount. Understanding this distinction matters because it affects what you'll pay online.
Most online portals allow you to view past bills as well. This history is useful if you want to compare your current charges to previous months or track your usage patterns over time. Some platforms provide graphs or charts showing your energy consumption, which can help you understand your usage trends.
If you see charges that seem incorrect or if your balance doesn't match what you expected, note the specific details before proceeding with payment. You can contact SREMC's customer service with these details to discuss questions about your bill.
Practical Takeaway: Review your bill details before paying. Even a quick check ensures that the account, billing period, and balance shown online match what you expect.
Processing Your Online Payment
After reviewing your bill information, you're ready to submit your payment. Look for a button or link that says "Pay Now," "Make a Payment," "Submit Payment," or similar language. Clicking this link will take you to the payment processing screen.

On the payment screen, you'll need to enter payment details. First, the system will confirm the amount you're paying. Some portals allow you to pay your full balance, while others let you enter a custom amount. If SREMC's system offers custom amounts, you can pay any portion of your bill—though paying the full amount is typically recommended to keep your account current and avoid late fees.
Next, you'll enter your payment method. SREMC typically accepts payment by bank account transfer (ACH) or credit/debit card. If you're paying by bank account, you'll need your routing number and account number. Your routing number is a nine-digit code that identifies your bank; you can find it at the bottom left of your checks or by contacting your bank. Your account number appears at the bottom of your checks as well. Bank account payments typically process within one business day and may have lower fees than card payments.
If you're paying by credit or debit card, you'll enter your card number, expiration date, and the three-digit security code on the back of the card. Be aware that credit card payments may include a transaction fee, which SREMC will disclose before you finalize the payment. This fee covers the cost of the credit card company's services.
After entering your payment method information, review all details one final time. Confirm the amount, payment method, and due date. Once you're certain everything is correct, click the button to process your payment. The system will then confirm that your payment has been submitted and may provide a confirmation number. Write down this confirmation number in case you need to reference your payment later.
The payment confirmation screen typically displays your transaction details and tells you when you can expect the payment to post to your account. Bank account payments usually process within one business day, while card payments may take slightly longer depending on your financial institution.
Practical Takeaway: Before clicking "submit" or "confirm," read through the payment screen one more time to verify the amount, payment method, and account information are all correct.
Managing Payment Confirmation and Account Records
After your payment processes, SREMC will provide confirmation that your transaction has been received. This confirmation typically appears on your screen immediately after
