Learn How Truist Bank Money Transfers Work

How Truist Bank Money Transfers Work: An Overview

Truist Bank, formed through the merger of BB&T and SunTrust in 2019, operates across the southeastern United States and beyond, serving millions of customers. Money transfers represent one of the core banking services that Truist offers to both personal and business customers. Understanding how these transfers function can help you move money between accounts, send funds to others, or receive payments more effectively.

Money transfers through Truist involve moving funds from one account to another, either within the bank's system or to external financial institutions. The bank processes these transactions through various channels and methods, each with different timelines and procedures. When you initiate a transfer, Truist's systems verify account information, confirm available funds, and route the transaction through appropriate banking networks.

Truist offers several transfer options to meet different customer needs. These include transfers between your own Truist accounts, transfers to accounts at other banks, wire transfers for larger amounts, and digital payment services. Each method operates differently in terms of speed, cost, and the information required to complete the transaction.

The transfer process begins when you provide recipient information and transfer details through Truist's channels. The bank then processes your request, which may involve routing through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network, the Federal Reserve's wire transfer system, or internal Truist systems. Processing times vary based on the method you choose and when you submit the transfer.

Practical takeaway: Familiarize yourself with Truist's different transfer options before you need to send money. Each method has different speeds and requirements, so knowing your choices helps you pick the right one for your situation.

Types of Money Transfers Available at Truist

Truist provides multiple pathways for transferring money, each designed for different circumstances. Understanding the distinctions between these types helps you choose the method that works best for your particular transfer needs.

Internal transfers move money between accounts you hold at Truist. These transfers typically process quickly because they occur within Truist's own banking system without needing to go through external networks. You can transfer funds between your checking and savings accounts, for example, or move money between different account types you own. These transfers generally appear in your accounts within hours or by the next business day, depending on when you submit them.

ACH transfers (Automated Clearing House) send money from your Truist account to accounts at other financial institutions or receive money from other banks into your Truist account. The ACH network processes these transfers in batches at set times throughout the day and evening. Standard ACH transfers typically take one to three business days to complete. This method works well for recurring payments, bill payments, or transfers where timing is not urgent. ACH transfers usually cost nothing when sending from your Truist account, though some banks charge fees for receiving ACH transfers.

Wire transfers move money quickly to accounts at other banks or to recipients in other countries. Domestic wire transfers often complete the same business day or within 24 hours. International wire transfers may take longer due to additional processing through correspondent banks. Truist typically charges a fee for wire transfers—domestic wires generally cost between $15 and $25, while international wires may cost $30 to $50 or more depending on the destination country and amount.

External transfers to non-Truist banks use ACH, wire, or real-time payment networks depending on the bank's capabilities and your selection. Real-time payment services, when available, can move money between banks in minutes rather than days.

Practical takeaway: Match your transfer type to your timeline. Use internal transfers for same-day needs between your own accounts, ACH for standard transfers that can wait a few days, and wire transfers when you need funds to arrive within 24 hours and can accept the associated fees.

Step-by-Step Process for Making a Transfer

Initiating a transfer through Truist involves several straightforward steps that you can complete through various platforms. Whether you use online banking, mobile banking, or in-person banking at a branch, the basic process remains similar, though specific screens and options may differ slightly.

First, you access your account through your preferred banking method. If using online banking, log in to Truist's website using your username and password. Mobile banking users open the Truist app and authenticate with their login credentials or biometric identification. In-person customers visit a local Truist branch and speak with a representative. Once you're into your account, navigate to the transfer section, which is typically labeled "Send Money," "Transfer Funds," or "Payments" depending on your platform.

Next, you select the type of transfer and the source account from which you want to send money. If you're moving funds between your own Truist accounts, select internal transfer and choose the account to transfer from. For transfers to other banks, select external transfer or ACH transfer. For wire transfers, select the wire transfer option and note that wires typically require more detailed information.

You then provide recipient information. For transfers between your own accounts, you simply select the destination account. For external transfers, you enter the recipient's bank account number and routing number (also called ABA number). If this is a new recipient, you may need to verify the information before the transfer processes. Truist allows you to save recipient information for future transfers, which speeds up subsequent transactions to the same person or business.

Next, enter the transfer amount and select your transfer date. For most transfers, you can choose to send immediately or schedule for a future date. If you schedule a transfer for a weekend or holiday, the bank typically processes it on the next business day. You may also have options to set up recurring transfers for regular payments.

Finally, review all transfer details carefully before confirming. Check the amount, recipient information, and source and destination accounts. Once you confirm, Truist sends your request into processing. You receive a confirmation number immediately, and the bank typically sends an email or notification confirming the transfer has been submitted.

Practical takeaway: Always double-check recipient account numbers and routing numbers before confirming a transfer. Account number errors can send your money to the wrong person, and correcting mistakes takes time. Take a screenshot or note your confirmation number for your records.

Timing and Processing: How Long Transfers Take

Transfer timing depends significantly on the method you choose and when you submit your request. Understanding these timelines helps you plan ahead and ensures money arrives when you need it. Truist processes transfers during business hours, Monday through Friday, with extended hours for some transaction types.

Internal transfers between your own Truist accounts typically process within hours, often appearing in your destination account the same day if you submit the request before the daily cutoff time (usually around 5 p.m. Eastern Time). If you initiate a transfer after cutoff, it may not process until the next business day. Overnight or weekend transfers generally post on the following business day.

Standard ACH transfers to other banks usually take one to three business days. When you initiate an ACH transfer on a Monday morning, for example, it might not appear in the recipient's account until Wednesday or Thursday. Truist batches ACH transfers at specific times and sends them through the ACH network for processing. The receiving bank then adds its own processing time, which explains why ACH transfers are slower than internal transfers. Many Truist customers use ACH transfers for routine bill payments and regular expenses where waiting a few days causes no problem.

Wire transfers move considerably faster. Domestic wire transfers typically complete within 24 hours and often arrive the same business day if you submit them before the cutoff time. A wire transfer submitted on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. might reach the recipient's bank by Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning. International wire transfers take longer because they must route through correspondent banks, typically requiring two to four business days depending on the destination country and the receiving bank's processing speed.

Holiday schedules and weekends affect processing times for all transfer types. Transfers submitted on Friday afternoon may not process until Monday. Transfers requested on holidays when banks are closed may not begin processing until the next business day. Truist's website and app typically indicate cutoff times for same-day processing, helping you determine when your transfer will move through the system.

Business day definitions are important to understand. Banking business days are Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays when banks are closed. Saturday, Sunday, and federal holidays do not count as business days for transfer processing purposes. A three-day ACH transfer initiated on Thursday might not complete until the following Monday.
