How to Change the Oil in Your Billy Goat Lawn Mower
Why Regular Oil Changes Matter
Oil keeps your Billy Goat mower's engine running smoothly. Over time, oil gets dirty and breaks down. Changing it regularly helps your mower last longer and work better. Most Billy Goat mowers need an oil change every 50 hours of use or once a season, whichever comes first.
What You'll Need
Before you start, gather these items:
- New oil (check your mower's manual for the right type and amount)
- An oil drain pan
- A wrench or socket set
- A funnel
- An old rag or paper towels
- A new oil filter (if your model has one)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Warm Up Your Mower
Run your Billy Goat for a few minutes to warm the oil. Warm oil drains better than cold oil. Then turn off the engine and let it cool for a few minutes—you don't want to burn yourself.
2. Locate the Drain Plug
Look at the bottom of your mower's engine. You'll see a bolt or plug. This is your drain plug. Place your drain pan underneath it to catch the old oil.
3. Remove the Drain Plug
Use your wrench to loosen and remove the drain plug. Be careful—some oil may still be warm. Let all the old oil drain into the pan. This may take a few minutes.
4. Replace the Drain Plug
Once the oil stops dripping, wipe the drain plug clean with a rag. Screw it back in by hand first, then tighten it with your wrench. Don't over-tighten it.
5. Change the Oil Filter (If Applicable)
Some Billy Goat models have an oil filter. If yours does, locate it on the engine. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen it and unscrew it by hand. Wipe the filter mounting surface clean. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter, then screw it on by hand until it's snug.
6. Add New Oil
Place your funnel in the oil filler cap opening on top of the engine. Pour in the recommended amount of new oil. Check your mower's manual to see exactly how much. Replace the oil filler cap.
7. Check the Oil Level
Wait a minute, then pull out the dipstick (if your mower has one) or look at the sight glass. Wipe it clean and reinsert it to get an accurate reading. The oil should be at the "full" mark. Add a little more if needed.
Tips for Success
- Always refer to your Billy Goat owner's manual for specific oil type, capacity, and drain plug location.
- Dispose of old oil properly. Many auto parts stores take used oil for recycling.
- Keep track of when you change the oil so you don't miss the next one.
- Work on a level surface so your oil level reading is accurate.
