When to Change Your Toro Lawn Mower's Oil
Why Oil Changes Matter for Your Mower
Oil keeps your Toro lawn mower's engine running smoothly. Over time, oil breaks down and collects dirt and debris. Changing your oil regularly helps your mower last longer and run better.
Standard Oil Change Schedule
For most Toro lawn mowers, you should change the oil every 50 hours of use. If you mow weekly during the growing season, that's roughly once per month.
Some newer Toro models may have longer intervals. Check your mower's owner manual for the exact recommendation for your specific model.
First Oil Change
New Toro mowers need their first oil change after just 5 hours of use. This removes metal particles and debris from the manufacturing process.
Seasonal Considerations
If you store your mower for winter, change the oil before putting it away. Fresh oil protects the engine during months of non-use.
At the start of spring, check your oil level before the first mow of the season. If you changed it before storage, you may just need to top it off.
Signs You Need an Oil Change
Don't wait for your scheduled time if you notice:
- Dark or dirty-looking oil on the dipstick
- Your mower running rough or making unusual sounds
- Smoke coming from the engine
- Oil level dropping below the "low" mark
How to Check Your Oil
Most Toro mowers have a dipstick under the engine cover. Pull it out, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, then pull it out again to read the level. Oil should reach the "full" line.
Always check oil when the engine is cold and the mower sits on level ground for accurate results.
