How to Change the Oil in Your Dixie Chopper Zero-Turn Mower

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter

Oil keeps your mower's engine running smoothly. Over time, oil breaks down and gets dirty. Changing it regularly helps your Dixie Chopper last longer and run better. Most owners change their oil once a season or after every 50 hours of use.

What You'll Need

  • New oil (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount)
  • An oil drain pan
  • A wrench or socket set
  • An oil filter wrench (if your model has a replaceable filter)
  • A new oil filter (if applicable)
  • Rags or paper towels
  • A funnel

Steps for Draining Old Oil

Step 1: Prepare Your Mower Park your Dixie Chopper on level ground. Let the engine cool completely. Turn off the fuel valve if your model has one.

Step 2: Locate the Drain Plug Look under the engine for the oil drain plug. Your owner's manual shows exactly where it is on your model.

Step 3: Drain the Oil Place the drain pan underneath. Use your wrench to loosen and remove the drain plug. Let all the old oil flow into the pan. This may take a few minutes.

Step 4: Replace the Drain Plug Gasket Once the oil stops dripping, wipe the drain plug clean. Install a new gasket (rubber ring) on the plug. Screw the plug back in by hand first, then tighten it with your wrench. Don't over-tighten.

Replacing the Oil Filter (If Your Model Has One)

Step 1: Locate the Filter Not all Dixie Chopper models have replaceable filters. Check your manual. If yours does, it's usually mounted on the side of the engine.

Step 2: Remove the Old Filter Place your drain pan below the filter. Use the oil filter wrench to turn the filter counterclockwise until it comes loose. Unscrew it by hand and let any remaining oil drain into the pan.

Step 3: Install the New Filter Wipe the filter mounting surface clean. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter. Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the engine, then turn it an additional three-quarter turn. Don't use the wrench to tighten the new filter.

Adding New Oil

Step 1: Locate the Fill Cap Find the oil filler cap on top of the engine. It usually has an oil can symbol on it.

Step 2: Add Oil Remove the cap. Place a funnel in the opening. Slowly pour in the new oil. Your owner's manual tells you how much to add.

Step 3: Check the Level Wait a minute, then pull out the dipstick. Wipe it clean and reinsert it fully. Pull it out again and check the level. Add more oil if needed until it reaches the "full" mark.

Step 4: Replace the Cap Screw the filler cap back on securely.

After You're Done

Run your engine for a few seconds to circulate the new oil. Turn it off and wait a minute. Check the dipstick again to make sure the level is still correct. Dispose of old oil properly—take it to a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used oil.

Tips for Success

  • Always refer to your Dixie Chopper owner's manual for your specific model's requirements
  • Change your oil when the engine is warm (but cool enough to touch safely)
  • Keep track of your oil changes so you remember when the next one is due
  • Never overfill the crankcase with oil
