When and How to Change Oil on Your Honda Metropolitan

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter for Your Metropolitan

Oil keeps your Honda Metropolitan's engine running smoothly. Over time, oil breaks down and collects dirt and debris. Changing your oil regularly helps your scooter run better and last longer.

How Often to Change Your Oil

Check your owner's manual for the exact schedule, but most Metropolitan models need an oil change every 600 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. If you ride frequently or in dusty conditions, you may need to change it more often.

Keep track of your mileage so you know when it's time. Mark it on your calendar or in your phone.

What You'll Need

  • New oil (check your manual for the correct type and amount)
  • A new oil filter
  • An oil drain pan
  • A wrench or socket set
  • An oil filter wrench
  • Rags or paper towels
  • A level surface to work on

Steps to Change Your Oil

1. Warm up your engine Run your Metropolitan for a few minutes to warm the oil. Warm oil drains better than cold oil. Then turn it off and let it cool slightly so you don't burn yourself.

2. Find the drain plug Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of your engine. Place your drain pan underneath it.

3. Drain the old oil Use your wrench to loosen the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise. Once it's loose, carefully unscrew it by hand. Let all the old oil drain into the pan. This may take a few minutes.

4. Replace the drain plug Wipe the drain plug clean with a rag. Screw it back in by hand first, then tighten it with your wrench. Don't over-tighten it.

5. Change the oil filter Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter by turning it counterclockwise. Once loose, unscrew it by hand. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber ring on the new filter. Screw the new filter on by hand until it's snug, then tighten it a bit more with your wrench.

6. Add new oil Pour the new oil into the filler cap on top of your engine. Use the amount listed in your owner's manual. Start with a little less than the full amount.

7. Check the oil level Wait a minute for the oil to settle. Then check the level using your dipstick or sight glass. Add more oil if needed until it reaches the full mark.

8. Run your engine Start your Metropolitan and let it run for about 30 seconds. Check underneath for leaks. Turn it off and wait a minute, then check the oil level again.

Disposing of Old Oil

Don't pour old oil down the drain or into the ground. Take it to an auto parts store, service station, or recycling center. Many places will take it for free.

Tips for Success

  • Work on a level surface so your oil level reads correctly
  • Keep your owner's manual handy to check oil type and capacity
  • Don't over-tighten the drain plug or filter
  • Wear old clothes in case of spills
  • If you're unsure at any step, ask a mechanic for help
