Step-by-Step Guide to Changing Oil on Your Vespa or Piaggio Scooter

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter

Oil keeps your Vespa or Piaggio engine running smoothly. Over time, oil breaks down and collects dirt and debris. Changing your oil regularly helps your engine last longer and run better. Most Vespa and Piaggio owners change their oil every 1,000 to 4,000 miles, depending on their model and riding habits.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather these items:

  • New oil (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount)
  • Oil filter (if your model has one)
  • Oil drain pan
  • Socket wrench or wrench set
  • Oil filter wrench (if applicable)
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Jack or center stand
  • Safety glasses

Always check your specific model's manual to confirm the oil type, capacity, and drain plug location.

Prepare Your Scooter

Park your Vespa or Piaggio on a level surface. Warm up the engine for a few minutes—warm oil flows out more easily than cold oil. Then turn off the engine and let it cool slightly so you don't burn yourself.

Use a jack or center stand to stabilize your scooter. Make sure it won't move while you work underneath.

Drain the Old Oil

Place your drain pan under the oil drain plug. The location varies by model, so check your manual. Using the correct wrench size, slowly unscrew the drain plug. Be careful—the oil may still be warm.

Let the old oil drain completely into the pan. This may take several minutes. Once it stops dripping, wipe the drain plug clean with a rag.

Replace the Oil Filter (If Your Model Has One)

Some Vespa and Piaggio models have removable oil filters; others do not. Check your manual first.

If your scooter has a filter, use an oil filter wrench to unscrew it. Position your drain pan to catch any remaining oil. Wipe the filter mounting surface clean. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter, then screw it on by hand until the gasket touches the engine. Turn it an additional three-quarters turn.

Reinstall the Drain Plug

Screw the drain plug back in by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Then use your wrench to tighten it firmly—but don't over-tighten, as this can damage the plug or engine casing. Wipe away any spilled oil.

Add New Oil

Locate the oil filler cap on top of your engine. Remove it and set it aside. Slowly pour in the new oil, checking the level as you go. Most Vespa and Piaggio scooters have a sight glass or dipstick to show the correct level. Fill until the oil reaches the "full" mark.

Reinstall the filler cap securely.

Check Your Work

Start your engine and let it run for about a minute. Watch for any leaks around the drain plug and filter. Turn off the engine and wait a minute, then check the oil level again. Add more if needed.

Dispose of Old Oil Properly

Never pour old oil down the drain or into the ground. Take it to a local recycling center, auto parts store, or service station that accepts used oil. Many places take it for free.

Keep Records

Write down the date and mileage when you changed your oil. This helps you remember when the next change is due and shows the maintenance history of your scooter.
