How to Know Your Oil Was Changed: A Guide to Stickers, Records, and What to Look For
The Sticker on Your Windshield
The easiest way to tell if your oil was recently changed is the small sticker on your windshield or door frame. This sticker shows:
- The date of the oil change
- The mileage when the change happened
- When you should come back (usually 3,000 to 10,000 miles later, depending on your car)
Look for this sticker in the top left or right corner of your windshield, or on the driver's side door frame. If you see a fresh sticker, your oil was recently changed.
Check Your Service Records
Keep all paperwork from oil changes in one place. Your records should show:
- The date the oil was changed
- Your car's mileage at that time
- The type of oil used (like 5W-30)
- The name of the shop or person who did the work
If you had the work done at a dealership or chain shop, you may also have a digital record. Check your email for receipts, or log into your account on their website.
Look Under the Hood
You can do a quick check yourself:
- Find the dipstick. It's usually a yellow or orange handle under the hood. Pull it out and wipe it clean with a paper towel.
- Put it back in. Reinsert the dipstick all the way, then pull it out again.
- Check the level. The oil should reach the "full" mark. If it's low, it may mean your oil hasn't been changed recently.
- Look at the color. Fresh oil is usually amber or light brown. Dark or black oil suggests it's older and may need changing soon.
Note: Checking color alone doesn't tell you if the oil was just changed—only a professional can say for certain when it was last done.
Ask Your Mechanic or Service Center
If you're unsure, contact the shop that did the work. They can confirm:
- The exact date and time of your oil change
- The mileage recorded
- What type of oil was used
- Any other work performed on your car
Many shops keep records for several years and can look up your service history by your name or phone number.
Keep Track Going Forward
To avoid confusion in the future:
- Take a photo of your sticker
- Write the date and mileage in your phone or a notebook
- Save all receipts in a folder (digital or paper)
- Set a reminder on your phone for when the next oil change is due
Knowing when your oil was last changed helps you stay on top of your car's maintenance and avoid missing important services.
